Damon Overton is the next high school senior selected to win this year’s S.O.A.R. Scholarship.

Damon graduated from United Township High School and plans to attend Ashford University in the fall.

Damon writes, "There have been several instances in my life where some things began to go in the opposite direction in which I wished that they could have gone, however my grandparents taught me to continue to keep my head up and remain optimistic and focused on my future."

Damon has participated in basketball and track, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Letterman's Club and has volunteered with the Student Hunger Drive and has helped with youth basketball programs.

Damon plans majoring in business and obtaining a job as a financial planner.

Each winner receives a $500 scholarship to be used toward further education and training. 

To qualify, applicants submitted essay answers to questions geared at describing their S.O.A.R. characteristics, which are:

S – Strength
O – Optimism
A – Achievement
R – Resolve

The scholarships were awarded through a partnership between News 8 and The Sedona Group. 

The Sedona Group believes that supporting young adults in their education and training after high school is a key part of keeping our workforce and community competitive.
