After 13 years of football success, Pat Angerer is hanging up the pads.

The Bettendorf, Iowa native played in the NFL for the Colts for four years. Announcing his retirement on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, Angerer cited injuries as the reason and said it was just the right time to retire.

“It just came to the point where enough was enough,” Angerer said. “And my body’s breaking down, and it was taking me longer to get warmed up and longer to recover. My work load wasn’t where I needed it to be, and it was time.”

In high school Angerer helped his team earn a state championship before spending five years at the University of Iowa. Playing football there, he enjoyed an Orange Bowl Victory and All American honors.

“That was probably the biggest win ever, believe it or not,” he said.

Beyond the field, Angerer has a wife and two sons. He said he’s looking forward to a change of pace.

“Yeah I’m really excited,” Angerer said. “It’s kind of weird but I kind of feel like I’m starting my life, which is kind of strange to say… but I’m looking forward to moving on. I love being here in the Quad Cities.”

With a smile, Angerer mentioned that the change might be tough on his wife.

“[For] so long she’s been married to an NFL player and now she’s married to just an ugly, jobless, you know, bum,” Angerer said with a smirk. “So I think it will be a hard transition for her, but hopefully she’ll figure it out.”

He retires with 327 career tackles, including 148 in 2011.
