MOLINE, Illinois -- A Milan resident died in a crash after the SUV she was riding in collided with a stolen van.

Moline police were alerted to a stolen van heading into the city on 53rd Street around 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, according to a statement from Detective Michael Griffin.  The van was "driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed."

Police said the van had been reported stolen out of Cedar County on March 24.

"Moline Police responded to the area but were unable to get into a position to attempt a traffic stop on the vehicle and lost sight of it," said Detective Griffin.

An officer in the area of 16th Street and John Deere Road saw the van headed westbound on John Deere Road when the van collided with a Ford Escape headed northbound.

The people in the Escape were taken to a local hospital, said police. A 51-year-old woman died from her injuries.  A male is still in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three people in the stolen van fled from the scene on foot, said Detective Griffin, and all three were arrested.  A 27-year-old woman was arrested at the scene, a 24-year-old man was apprehended two blocks away and a 25-year-old man was apprehended three blocks away "after a lengthy search."

All three of the people in the van were charged with possession of stolen property, felon in possession of a firearm and reckless homicide.  Formal charges were expected to be reviewed with the Rock Island County State's Attorney on Thursday.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Moline Police Department at 309-524-2140, or CrimeStoppers at 309-762-9500.
