A Chicago man got a raw deal when he inadvertently bought a stolen car from a Craigslist seller.

Willie Smith said when he found a car on Craigslist that he wanted to buy he did it in the safest way possible, according to a report by WGN. He had friends with him and he bought the car in the daylight hours.

Smith paid $4,300 cash for the 2007 powder blue Chrysler 300, according to the report. In exchange he got the title and bill of sales with signatures. A man reportedly named Jose Ramirez was the seller.

That same day that Smith bought the car, he was pulled over by police and was told the car was stolen, reported WGN. Further tracking showed that the car had previously belonged to a 38-year-old woman and her car was stolen in August 2015.

The car was impounded and Smith had to buy another car.

WGN said that the reported seller denied any knowledge of the car or the sale.
