1 Illinois hospital gets 'F' grade, here's how your hospital ranked

Hospitals were ranked on safety, overall practice and staffing. One hospital was told to have staff "wash their hands" before seeing patients in order to improve.

MOLINE, Ill. — According to Leapfrog, hospital safety grades are given to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals across the country twice each year.

Hospitals are measured by more than 30 different national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the leapfrog hospital survey and from other sources, according to Leapfrog.

After all the data is collected hospitals are given a single letter grade A to F, used to show how the hospital system keeps patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

Here's how hospitals measured up in the Illinois Quad Cities Region:

Trinity Moline (John Deere Road)

Trinity Moline was given a C grade overall. According to Leapfrog the hospital system performed below average in four areas when it came to infections, two areas in problems during surgery, two areas in safety problems, four areas in practices to prevent errors and two areas in staffing.

Trinity Moline declined to report data to Leapfrog for the following categories:

  • Effective leadership to prevent errors.
  • Enough qualified nurses.
  • Staff work together to prevent errors.

Trinity Moline is part of UnityPoint Health, which covers the campuses of Rock Island, Muscatine and Bettendorf. The following statement covers all of these locations:

"Like all hospitals, various organizations provide ratings for patient care quality, safety and satisfaction and each rating system differs in its methodology. Our team members remain committed to providing the best quality, safety and outcomes for every patient, every time."

Genesis Medical Center, Silvis (Illini Drive)

Genesis Medical Center in Silvis was given a C grade overall. According to Leapfrog, the hospital performed below average in three areas for infections, zero areas for problems with surgery, zero areas in safety, four areas in practices in place to prevent errors and all six areas in staffing.

Leapfrog provided some suggestions to improve, one of which is to hire enough staff to care for the number of patients.

WQAD reached out to Genesis Health System for a response to this grade, here's their response:

"It is nice to achieve recognition for quality and safety, and Genesis focuses every day on providing the highest level of quality care. There are many organizations like the Leapfrog Group that provide reports on health care institutions, and each measures the components of quality and safety differently. Genesis uses a balanced approach of quality and safety management by understanding the drivers of excellent patient outcomes."

OSF St. Mary's Galesburg (N. Seminary Street)

OSF St. Mary's in Galesburg was given a C grade overall. According to Leapfrog, the hospital performed below expectations in three areas with infections, one area in problems during surgery, one area in safety, two areas in practices in place to prevent errors and two areas in staffing.

Leapfrog says while the staff responsiveness is above average, having specially trained staff in ICU's would boost the hospital's rating.

WQAD reached out to OSF St. Mary's for a response on their grade, here's their response:

"OSF HealthCare works hard to provide the highest level of patient care. Of the 15 hospitals across our Ministry, 10 of which receive a Leapfrog grade, OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, our 649-bed Level 1 trauma center in Peoria, received an A; 5 earned a B; and 4 were graded at a C, with three of those just fractionally lower than the B level.

"OSF supports transparency about quality and safety information such as that provided through the Leapfrog grades and is committed to finding ways to improve safety and quality of care. We are proud of the work our Mission Partners (employees) do every day and how they have faced the many challenges of the past two years."
