Area high schools among best in nation

Some high schools in and around the Quad Cities are ranked among the best high schools in the nation and in their respective states.

Some high schools in and around the Quad Cities are ranked among the best high schools in the nation and in their respective states.

The rankings are part of an annual report published by U.S. News and World Report.

The report ranks public high schools based their ability to prepare students for college.  Criteria for the rankings include the ratio of students to teachers, college readiness of students as well as student proficiency in mathematics and reading.

National rankings included more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia.

Macomb Senior High School was ranked #54 in the Illinois and #1712 nationally.  It has a 16:1 student-teacher ratio that is near the state’s average.  The school ranks above the Illinois average for college readiness as well as for student proficiency in math and reading.

Galesburg High School ranked #63 in the Illinois and #2,041 nationally.  The school’s 18:1 student-teacher ratio is larger than the Illinois average.  The school ranks near the Illinois average for math and reading proficiency.

Annawan High School was also recognized nationally for its 8:1 student-teacher ratio and above state average ranks for math and reading proficiency.

Avon Senior High School and Bureau Valley High School were also nationally recognized and ranked among the state’s top high schools in Illinois.

In Iowa, West Liberty High School ranks #8 in the state and #1581 nationally.  Its 11:1 student-teacher ratio means smaller-than-average class sizes.  The school ranks above the state average for college readiness and near the state average for math and reading proficiency.

Bettendorf’s Pleasant Valley High School ranks #11 in Iowa and #1763 in the nation.  It has a 17:1 student-teacher ratio but ranks above state averages for college readiness as well as for proficiency in math and reading.

Burlington Community High School is nationally recognized for above state average scores for college preparedness.  The student-teacher ratio is above the Iowa average at 15:1 and the school’s math and reading proficiency scores were near the state average.

Other area schools recognized nationally on the report include Calamus-Wheatland; Central High School in DeWitt; Maquoketa Community High School; Mediapolis High School; Mount Pleasant High School and Wapello Senior High School.
