A man from the Iowa City area was convicted of counterfeiting thousands of dollars worth of postage stamps.

A man from the Iowa City area was convicted of counterfeiting thousands of dollars worth of postage stamps.

Authorities said that 43-year-old David Nelson Chasse was sentenced on August 28, 2013 to four months in prison for forging nearly $60,000 worth of postage stamps.

According to United States Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt, Chasse photocopied sheets of postage, then used the counterfeits for his business, The Birthday Company Incorporated.

Klinefeldt said that the U.S. Postal Inspection Service monitored the postage used for the company’s mail and determined some was counterfeit. In September of 2010 federal agents searched Chasse’s home, where they found several thousand dollars worth of counterfeit metered postage stamps.

In addition to the prison time, Chasse was also ordered to serve 6-months of home confinement, followed by three years of probation, according to the U.S. Attorney. He was also ordered to pay almost $60,000 in restitution and $100 toward the Crime Victims Fund.
