Which store has the cheapest groceries in Moline? Here's what we found

We went to Aldi, Walmart, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco and Fareway to compare prices on eight identical items.

MOLINE, Ill. — Thursday night, News 8 aired a grocery store prices comparison story that had some errors in it. We were looking to find the cheapest price for each item on our list, however, we did not search the stores well enough and our prices that night were inaccurate.

Now, we went back out to fix our error and find the cheapest option for each item on our list. The information below was gathered on Friday, Jan. 20.

The eight items we bought from each store were:

  1. A gallon of 2% milk.
  2. Baby food.
  3. 12 large eggs.
  4. White bread.
  5. Diced tomatoes.
  6. Pasta sauce.
  7. Spaghetti.
  8. Corn.

Milk and eggs were the two items that varied the most in price.

Milk Prices:

  • Aldi was $2.75
  • Walmart was $2.76
  • Hy-Vee was $2.85
  • Jewel-Osco was $3.49
  • Fareway was $4.75

Egg Prices:

  • Fareway was $3.79
  • Jewel-Osco was $4.49
  • Hy-Vee was $4.62
  • Aldi was $4.99
  • Walmart was $5.07 (Walmart had a cheaper option that was $4.87, but was out of stock).

When it comes down to what store was the cheapest total, Hy-Vee takes the crown by 24 cents.

Total Cost of eight items:

  • Hy-Vee: $14.09
  • Walmart: $14.23
  • Aldi: $14.44
  • Fareway: $16.40
  • Jewel-Osco $16.91

As you can see, the three cheapest stores are separated by only 35 cents, so you really can't go wrong at either one if you are buying the cheapest items.

Experts recommend other ways to save money are to clip coupons and look for items on sale. They also say to stock up on either nonperishable foods or foods you can freeze and save while they're on sale.
