James Zahara s decision to become a TV meteorologist started at a very early age in a small town near Chicago. "At times as a young and very active youngster, I was able to enjoy the many pleasures of the great outdoors with my family and friends. Having a sizable backyard, there was always something to do. My attention, though, always seemed to be directed toward the horizon," says James. The weather fascinated James with its unpredictable changes from one period to the next. He even created forecasts which he handed to his parents as they rushed out the door to work.
After high school James enrolled at Indiana University to receive a degree in meteorology. Unfortunately, the school had few courses in weather so he transferred to the University of Kansas where he received his degree in meteorology. After doing an internship at the ABC affiliate in Kansas City, James received a call from a station in West Virginia where he was hired as chief meteorologist. After three years in West Virginia he accepted a job in Huntsville, Alabama where James became the morning/noon weekday meteorologist.
After working in Huntsville for almost two years, James headed to the Quad Cities when he accepted a position at NewsChannel 8. Today James can be seen every weekday morning as meteorologist for Good Morning Quad Cities. He's been at NewsChannel 8 for 17 years.
James has received several broadcasting awards including the Certified Broadcasting Meteorology Seal (CBM) from the American Meteorological Society. Only a select few in the state of Illinois have received this award.
James fascination of meteorology not only shows on screen but also in the classroom. As an associate professor at several colleges, James lectures to many students on the basics of meteorology. James and his wife Renee are parents to a beautiful daughter named Aviana. In his free time James enjoys his passion to several outdoor activities from golf, tae kwon do, and long distance running.
