CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man has pleaded not guilty to charges that accuse him of scouting out the Indian city of Mumbai to lay the groundwork for the 2008 terrorist attacks that left 166 people dead.

David Coleman Headley is a 49-year-old American citizen. He also pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that accuse him of planning a violent attack on a Danish newspaper whose cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad offended Muslims.

Headley could potentially face the death penalty if convicted of the most serious charges. But prosecutors say he's cooperating with their investigation — something that could get him a lesser sentence.
