DAVENPORT, Iowa -
Oscar winning actor and director Kevin Costner joked about the jungle-like landscaping inside his Davenport hotel, and the reporter and photographer waiting to approach him about an impromptu interview in the lobby.
''I came through this jungle and then you guys jumped up and stalked me, and actually scared me for a second. I wasn't sure if I was being subpoenaed or what,'' Costner said.
He was nothing but nice after finding out the WQAD crew was just there to talk about his band Modern West playing at Davenport's Col Ballroom Tuesday night.
He says he flew in last night, after playing in the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.
''We had 18-hundred in Clear Lake. It was great last night and we're hoping the same thing can happen here. I don't know if people in Davenport are going to show up or not but we''re here to play loud and long.''
Costner signed a couple of autographs at the hotel. Then, wearing a patchwork shirt and jeans, sunglasses and a goatee, he walked anonymously to Front Street Brewery for lunch. Talking along the way, he says he missed his wife Christine and two young children.
''They always travel with me except this trip. This trip has been pretty dysfunctional. We've been on the road nine days, Connectiicut, New York, Canada, so it hasn't been conducive to be in a bus with the babies'', Costner said. ''I'm lonely for 'em''.
Costner has been back a couple times to the Hawkeye State where he made Field of Dreams.
''Iowa has been a really interesting place for me, historically , now in my own life, with the movie and the music and the way the people in Iowa have accepted our songs.''
