DAVENPORT, Iowa -
The crime may seem minor to some but a Davenport man wants justice and is asking the world to help him get it. News 8's Chris Williams shows you the unusual effort to catch a thief.
Youtube has become the place for folks to share their home movies with complete strangers. You can find all sorts of videos from graduations to choreographed weddings entrances. Anyone who types in a Youtube search topic gets an almost endless list of entertainment possibilities streaming before them. If you search the word "Davenport", Eric Marks' video is among the selection but Eric's not looking to entertain, he wants you to witness a crime and help him solve it.
"I thought the best thing I could do is put it on the internet", he explained talking about the woman in his security camera video. "Put it on Youtube. The more people that see her, the better chance somebody may recognize her."
It isn't what the authorities would consider a major crime but it was not the welcome Eric and his family expected when they moved into their new home in the 6200 block of Clark Street. Before moving in he installed a security system and it was on that system's camera he caught the welcome wagon wheeling away with his mountain bike.
"She looked like she was handing out fliers because she's dropping a piece of paper in everyone's driveway", he said describing the video that shows a woman enter his garage and steal a mountain bike. "And she gets here, saw the bike, stopped what she was doing and grabbed it and she was gone just like that."
Eric filed a police report but says the detective told him, without an identity it would be tough to track down the suspect. He turned to Youtube hoping a few more eyes would stumble upon it and help him catch the thief, maybe even get back the black and gold bike.
"What's really irritating is my son and I were going golfing that day. I'd just put my golf clubs in the car, went back in the house to grab my phone and my shoes and the garage door wasn't even open five minutes."
He's since installed a few more cameras and is getting settled in despite this unplanned first home video in his new neighborhood.
