MUSCATINE COUNTY, Iowa -
A train that jumped it's tracks this afternoon stopped traffic in Muscatine County. A press release from the Muscatine County Sheriff's Department says a 911 call came in just after 12:30 that about 20 rail cars derailed.
It happened about 250 feet east of the Noble Avenue and Hinkeyville Drive intersection in Atalissa. On-lookers were asked to stay back from the area because the cars were stacked in all directions and some were tipping down off the tracks.
One lady says, "We were just listening to the news when we seen a train derailed between Moscow and Atalissa. We're from Moscow, so we decided to get in the truck and go look."
Officer Brands of the Muscatine County Sheriff's Department says the train was carrying grain and syrup and no injuries were reported.
"Well, it's kinda scary," another on-looker pointed out. "The train comes through Moscow all the time. If it would have happened where it was residential, it would've been scary."
Heavy equipment moved some of the rail cars that was blocking the road, but still has the jumbled mess to clean up. As of 5:45, traffic in that area was back to normal.
The Muscatine County Sheriff's Department has not released the cause of the derailment nor which way the train was heading. The Atalissa Fire Department and the Muscatine County Secondary Roads Department assisted at the scene.
