QUAD CITIES, Iowa-Ill. -
News 8 has learned about a plan that could help some of the customers affected by the closing of Rio Tan. Chris Williams has the details in tonight's 8 On Your Side Report.
The owner of Tan World confirmed for us he has signed a lease with the property managers on 53rd Street and will open a Tan World salon at the site of the now closed Davenport Rio Tan.
"We're gonna get it reopened and show that a salon can do it right and make them happy and we're gonna be around. We've been around 15 years and we're gonna keep it that way", said Tan World owner Brandon Hoffman.
The company already has a location on Kimberly Road in Bettendorf. It's a national chain with salons in 10 states including Iowa. There are no Tan Worlds in Illinois.
The Rio Tan owner closed both his Davenport and Moline salons last month without informing customers. We looked into the situation and found customers who'd paid for minutes they couldn't use. Employees admitted they were ordered not to warn customers of the impending close. They later complained the owner failed to pay them for the final two weeks of work at Rio Tan. We reported on their situation and contacted both the Iowa and Illinois Department's of Labor. Within 24 hours the owner wired money to pay the employees.
The former manager of Rio Tan turned over property to the owner's lending bank. Included was the customer database containing information including unused customer minutes.
"We're working on a deal where we can get the database", said Hoffman, "so that we can get all of those customers, know what they have and fulfill their needs."
If the owner of Tan World gets that database it would be only for those customers who tanned in Davenport and the customers from Davenport with unused minutes would be able to use their minutes at the new Tan World. He stressed that he would only be able to honor the minutes of Rio Tan customers who had unused minutes at the 53rd street location.
Hoffman expects to begin construction on the Rio Tan storefront in the coming days with a hopeful opening date of September 1st.
