DAVENPORT, Iowa -
Davenport residents discussed the $50 million Sewer Tunnel Project with city officials Thursday evening at Smart Intermediate School. Phase one is slated to start in the next few months and will take about 1.5 years to complete. Foley Construction, a Davenport company, will start at the intersection of River Drive and Howell, then Howell to Sixth Street. It will go under the railroad tracks and follow Wilkes Avenue to Ninth Street.
Neighbors who live along those routes know it'll be a mess but they want to make sure they can get in and out of their driveways for work and school and make sure the construction site is well marked. "Having these open trenches in residential neighborhoods where there's kids," mentions Moira Bradford. "We all know kids are curious and they like to horse around and stuff and that's a concern to me."
City officials fielded questions like these at the meeting. They say they want to hear the publics concern and will hold future meetings to make sure everyone's questions are addressed. "The inconveniences and things but we're really making a strong effort to do everything up front to minimize it," says Davenport PublicWorks Tom Leabhart.
The rest of the project will continue down Wilkes and Garfield then to the Duck Creek Sewers. The entire project is estimated to take 5 years to complete.
