MOLINE, Illinois -
The Moline Children's Learning Center is a place for children diagnosed with learning disabilities. They specialize in helping students with dyslexia and general language based disabilities. After four years of successful service to 34 kids they received news that they were losing their funding. Originally, the 32 degree Masonic Learning Centers for Children agreed to fund the Moline Children's Learning Center forever. They ran into trouble this summer due to the struggling economy. They were forced to close 11 centers, including the one in Moline.
"We want to do everything we can do to keep the center open because we have kids who have been in the center now for two or three years and we don't want to go to they wayside," said James Houtz, Chair of the board of Governors for the Scottish Rite Valley of Moline.
The cost to run the center is $8,200 dollars per month.
"We're a totally charitable organization so we want enough money to support the center, support our bills, and nothing more," said Houtz.
Rent for the Center is free. Their expenses include supplies and wages. The national organization will provide funding through December. Houtz said they plan to hold fund raisers to raise the money including two Poker Runs in the summer and Bingo every Saturday at the Lyons Club. You can contact the Moline Children's Learning Center at (309) 797-5322.
