What's your opinion of the Layoff Game? Does it makes people think more about the people who are laid off? Is it a harsh joke to those who have lost their jobs?

QUAD CITIES, Iowa/Ill. - More than two million jobs were lost in 2008, and 2009 has not started out any better. Now an academic game lab called Tiltfactor in New York is giving you a chance to "be the boss" and try your hand at laying off workers to save your business.

It's simply called "Layoff" and it looks at the financial situation of a business and even how a bailout can help it.

In a statement to USA Today, Mary Flanagan, the director of Tiltfactor Lab says, "The game has an unsettling feeling. It is cute and fun to play, but when you realize how frightening the situation is, the game in fact functions as a very dark portent."

The game is similar to the popular "Bejeweled" game which was first developed in 2001. In the game, you match three or more people who have similar jobs and send them to the unemployment line. Players can save their company more money by laying off workers in groups of five. If there are no moves left, you have one "bank bailout" option to use. Bankers are the only ones exempt from layoffs. To try your hand at the playoff game: click here
