WALCOTT, Iowa - The Memorial Day weekend means more drivers will be hitting the roadways. State Police have stepped up their patrol to make sure everyone stays safe.

Trooper David Helton of the Iowa State Patrol explains what they are looking for this holiday weekend. "We're looking for the obvious. High speeds, following to close which is the major cause of accidents, impaired driving." Iowa State Trooper Dan Loussaert says, "Seems like when the temperatures go up, sometimes the safety goes down and speeds go up. It's just a good reminder summer's here but safety's the most important thing."

News 8 rode along with Trooper Helton as he ticketed a man who was driving 90 mph in a 70 mph zone. His $260 ticket also included the "following to close" violation.
