DAVENPORT, Iowa - More than $1.975 million was awarded Wednesday afternoon by the Scott County Regional Authority for the Spring 2009 Grant Cycle. 153 groups applied for the free money and 73 of those were awarded some cash. The funds were distributed between education, government and non-profit organizations.

One recipient who received $35,000 was St. Ambrose University for their biodiesel project. They use 100% biodiesel, which is made from used cooking oil, in their lawn equipment. Right now, they have a very small room in the basement next to the boiler system to mix the concoction. This grant will help them build a bigger place to work next to the university kitchen. "We are going to create a place right next to the cafeteria where we can just pump the fryer oil into the area where it's being made," explains Linda Wastyn, the Assistant Vice President of St. Ambrose University.

The SCRA awards money two times a year. The next application due date is September 1st for the Fall Grant Cycle.
