GENESEO, Ill. - A Quad City area congregation is looking for answers this morning, after a fire started at their church overnight damaging much of the building.

The fire broke out around 11:30 pm at St. John's Lutheran Church just outside of Geneseo. Crews from Geneseo and Osco were the first to respond to the fire. Three additonal departments were also called in to help with the blaze.

The church was in the middle of a renovation project, adding on an elevator to the building. It's believed that the fire started in the original part of the church and not in the part that was being renovated. Last year, the church received $50,000 in damage during July's wind storm.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire. We hope to have more information for you later today on Quad Cities News 8.
