DAVENPORT, Iowa -
Dozens of people tried to help carry on a tradition of sports writing in the quad cities.
The Dearrel Bates Scholarship 9-Pin Tournament was held Sunday at Miller Time bowling in Davenport.
His wife Janet bowled the first ball for the tournament's afternoon session.
Bates was a long time sports writer for the Quad City Times. "He was in sports journalism for over 40 years, and the number of lives he touched in such a positive way, he's looking at us yes he is" says Janet.
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to an area high school student who majors in journalism or sports communication.
