Cyber Monday sounds sensational at the Bushel Basket Candle Company.

That's where owner Jackie Payne checks the latest internet orders. They come from New York to California and parts between.

"Without the web, we probably wouldn't be where we are now," she said.

Nearly a decade in business, attention to detail makes it a homegrown success story. The husband and wife team do nearly all the work themselves. That means 12 to 14 hour days and working seven days a week during the holiday season at their store, 2900 E. Lincolnway in Sterling.

"They like our product," Les said. "And when you see the smile on their faces, it's enjoyable to us."

The business helps to define a modern retailer these days. They blend storefront success with internet opportunities. It's the way to make a sale.

Online sales account for nearly 20% of its business. Response on Facebook is phenomenal. Their fan page gets up to 12,000 hits a day. That means more sales on their website, www.bbcandle.com.

The brick-and-mortar store is open 10-5:30 (Mon.-Fri.), 10-5 (Saturday) and 1-5 (Sunday). But the website never closes.

"It's just 24-hour access," said Jackie. "And the 24-hour access for that instant gratification shopping is priceless."

Crafting a niche in a competitive field, the Paynes help customers feel at home in the store while they build a future with custom creations.

"It's not always the day-to-day you keep focusing on, but remember you're building long term value," Jackie concluded.

At the Bushel Basket Candle Company, it's a Cyber Monday where all the world is a customer.
