ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -
The bitter temperatures haven't stopped many of us from venturing out. Trinity Medical Center has already treated about three people with hyperthermia. And in cold weather like this, you may get frostbite and not even know it. It's important to dress appropriately, cover exposed skin and dress in layers to prevent tissue damage.
According to Trinity's Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Jack Buzek, "if you feel your fingers and toes start to burn, get them under some warm water as soon as you can. If they start to blister, that's when you should seek medical attention."
Dr. Buzek warns not drink alcohol to warm up "because it does actually the opposite. It dilates blood vessels on the surface skin and you lose body heat faster."
