WILTON, Iowa -
It continues to be speculated but former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad said he hasn't officially entered the race for governor. "Literally, thousands of Iowans got involved in a draft movement to ask me to think about running for governor again," said Branstad.
"I'm real surprised he wants to get back into the battle. But I know he can handle it," said Joyce Gauger of West Liberty.
Republican Iowa Representative Jeff Kaufmann held a fundraiser for his own campaign Saturday afternoon in Wilton where Branstad spoke. He talked about the former governor as if he was already in the running for the 2010 election against Governor Chet Culver. "He's going to take a pay cut. He's going to put his legacy in jeopardy," said Kaufman of the 62-year-old former governor. "He really has everything to lose with this run and not a whole lot to gain."
Branstad was President of Des Moines University for six years before he retired a few weeks ago. He said he is on the campaign trail to talk about Iowa issues.
Branstad served as Iowa's governor from 1983 to 1999. When elected, he was the youngest in Iowa history to hold the office at age 35. When he left office, he was the longest serving governor.
