Sterling woman arrested after Thursday morning hit-and-run that injured teen

The woman has been charged with numerous traffic offenses after allegedly hitting a 13-year-old boy with her car and leaving the scene.

STERLING, Ill. — A Sterling woman was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly hitting a teenage boy with her car and leaving the scene, according to the Sterling Police Department.

On Thursday, Dec. 1 at about 7:52 a.m., police were alerted to the scene of a hit-and-run at the intersection of 6th Avenue and East Lefevre Road.

Police found that a 13-year-old boy was walking south on the 6th Avenue crosswalk when an SUV turned east onto East Lefevre, struck the boy and continued away from the area.

Officers located the driver, identified as 49-year-old Maria Aguilar Ortiz of Sterling, and took her into custody.

After a brief investigation, Aguilar Ortiz was arrested, charged with numerous traffic offenses and released with a court appearance date.

The boy was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Information on his condition is unavailable.
